World Humanitarian Day!

It is a blessing that our religion not only encourages humanitarianism; but is one that commands us to act in a humanitarian manner toward others. We are bound by Islam (rich and poor) to help those in need, speak kindly to everyone, do charity work, and give Zakat and Alms (Sadaqah). Many Qur’anic Ayahs and hadiths emphasize how a noble act or a good deed, even a kind word could affect the lives of others and help them through bad times and ordeals. In His Holy Book, Allah (swt) said: “Those who believe, and do deeds of righteousness, and establish regular prayers and regular charity, will have their reward with their Lord. On them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve.”  Quran (2:277).  Allah also emphasizes equality in Surat Al-Imran: “You shall not attain righteousness until you spend out of what you love (in the way of Allah). Allah knows whatever you spend.” ( Qur’an 3:92)

In Sahih Al-Bukhari, it is reported that  Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said, “Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, should not hurt his neighbor, and whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should serve his guest generously, and whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should speak what is good or keep silent”.

Let’s take this day to remind ourselves and teach our kids to be mindful of others, and to remind ourselves of the great rewards that we shall reap for doing so.
