The origin of Udheya

After Prophet Ibrahim (as) dreamt that he was sacrificing his son, Prophet Isma’il (as), Isma’il (as) wanted to comply as a sign of devotion and obedience to Allah swt. Although Al-Shaytan pleaded with him not to do so, he was determined to do whatever it took to prove his sincere loyalty and belief in Allah. However, Allah swt spared Prophet Isma’il with a ram just before Prophet Ibrahim was about to comply. And since that incident, Muslims worldwide celebrate this on Eid-Ul-Adha by sacrificing rams, following the Sunnah of Prophet Ibrahim, intending to earn Allah’s blessings and acceptance.

But, how do we deliver this story to our kids and get them excited about Eid-Ul-Adha?

Firstly, we should talk to them about the mercy and tenderness of Allah, and how He swt spared Prophet Isma’il on that day. He Subhanahu-wa-ta’ala, the most merciful, was only testing the devotion of Prophet Ibrahim (as).

On the other hand, let them know how far Prophet Ibrahim (as) was willing and determined to follow Allah’s orders, no matter what, as He (as) was confident that Allah swt would never harm or abandon him. He delegated all his concerns and his whole life to Allah.

They should also get to know about Hajj, or pilgrimage; and that this incident took place after Hajj, exactly on the tenth day of Dhu-Al-Hijjah, on the twelfth and last month of the Hijri calendar.

Finally, Let’s make this fun for them!

1- Allow them to choose their finest clothes for performing Sala-Tul-Eid.

It will really get them excited to be in control, which in turn boosts their confidence and enthusiasm.

2- Join them in creating simple Eid crafts.

A simple sheep craft or Eid greeting cards to family members and close friends are easy and a nice way to say Eid Mubarak, besides the fun of making them together.

3- Let them participate in handing out Eideyyas and Udheya meat.

This allows them to sense the happiness of sharing with others and feeling the great responsibility of charity for the sake of Allah. It also gives them a chance to consider the less privileged.

4- Teach them to wear a smile and spread joy and happiness everywhere they go.

A genuine smile can go a long way. It can really make someone’s day so, make sure to put on your best one. Who knows? you might be a reason for someone’s happiness on this day and every day.

May Allah swt grant us and our kids the strength and faith of Prophet Ibrahim. May He spare us all from harm like He swt spared Prophet Isma’il, amen. <3
